Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine whether the distress tolerance mediates the impact of negative affect intensity and attentional control on social anxiety. For this purpose, this study collected the data of 349 college students through online questionnaire using the affect intensity measures, Attentional Control Questionnaire, Distress Intolerance Index, Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, Social Phobia Scale. The collected data were analyzed using Structural Equation, The results of the analysis are as follow. First, there was a significant positive correlation between negative affect intensity, distress intolerance, and social anxiety, and there was a significant negative correlation between attentional control, distress intolerance and social anxiety. Second, in the structural equation analysis, the path of negative affect intensity directly affecting social anxiety was not significant and the indirect path which affected social anxiety through distress tolerance was significant. This implies that negative affect intensity influences social anxiety by mediating distress tolerance, rather than directly affecting social anxiety. Attentional control was found to be significant both in the path directly affecting social anxiety and indirect pathways influencing social anxiety via distress tolerance. This indicates that attentional control has a direct impact on social anxiety and at the same time by mediating distress tolerance. Finally, the significance and limitations of this study were discussed.
